Walking Man

(Gary Mccallister (one Man Mormon Blues Band))
I Nephi 16:12 "And it came to pass that we did take our tents and depart into the wilderness . . . ."

I tried to imagine traveling through the desert wilderness for years at a time. We know that there were hard times. But in eight years, there must surely have been a few times when camp was set, everything was at peace and rest was good. I thought about Lehi and Sariah and all that they went through together. Just walking together must have been a delight, at least some time on their journey.

I spent a night alone on the desert once, long ago. The moon was full, the heat was gone, and it was just peaceful to walk along. I pictured them traveling at night to escape the heat. I pictured affection between husband and wife who are surmounting difficulties together. I pictured Lehi, weary at the end of the night, but pushing on, one foot after another, for the sake of his family.
I've been up all night Mama walking in the sand
Gonna sleep all day and longer if I can
It's too hot to travel across this burning land
Some men stop and talk but I'm the walking man

Don't that moon look good shining on you and me
Don't you think this wilderness is the place to be
Don't that feel good that cool night time breeze
Don't you look good Mama looking back at me

Don't that moon look good shining on me and you
The moon is so bright it makes the shadows blue
You know nights like this are far between and few
Don't know where were going or what we're going to do

Look at that sun burning on the hill
I fear the lack of strength but I still have the will
I know I can't rest any time soon until
I get to where I'm going and then I can be still

I've been traveling trying to catch the rain
I've been traveling trying to leave the pain
I just keep on moving until I'm with God again
I've been hard traveling a better place to gain
