Yellow Dust
(Gary Mccallister (one Man Mormon Blues Band))
I Nephi 2:4 ". . . He departed into the wilderness. And he left his house, and the land of his inheritance, . . . and took nothing with him, save it were his family, and provisions, . . . and departed into the wilderness."
At the time I wrote this song, I pictured Lehi running for his life through barren and harsh desert lands, recalling the events and his personal afflictions that led to this event. With more deliberation I think it may have been less hasty than I originally thought. However, picturing them traveling in fear and haste is far more dramatic. That is the image that I was trying to capture.
Yellow dust on my skin
Where does it end and I begin
Yellow dust the stench of sin
Putrid breath of deaths toothless grin
I was kissed by poetry
And given the gift of prophecy
But all gifts come with a price you see
My prison is I must be free
So into Hell I have been driven
By the very ones for which I have been given
Story and song and ancient vision
Of the only man who from death has risen
I gave the last water to you
If it's not enough nothing more to do
But seek the hill top the distant view
And struggle on for something new
Ancient rock under foot
Bitter grass with barren root
Feet embedded in hot soft sand
For massive distance across a massive land
Spoken words or words with a quill
All that matters is the matter of will
Whether our lives are Heaven or Hell
Is the only story we get to tell
From all the things that I have been
Man and poet friend and kin
Yellow dust on my skin
Where do I end and it begins
