Eternal Law

(Gary Mccallister (one Man Mormon Blues Band))
I Nephi 1:6 ". . . there came a pillar of fire and dwelt upon a rock before him; and he saw heard much . . . and he did quake and tremble exceedingly."

This is the verse that sort of started it all. I was reading this and it suddenly dawned on me that we are never told what Lehi saw in this, his first, vision. He goes home and has a dream of which we are told in detail. But never what was so disturbing at the burning rock.

Since the scriptures never tell us, I feel like I am free to make up whatever I want, and I have always felt that the duality of the universe held special significance. Anyway, that the story behind this song.
Dogs like Gibbons howled in the night
I sought my God beneath starlight
All the lovers were home and gone
A pillar of fire burned like the sun

On a rock the fire did burn
And I did quake tremble and turn
For what was there revealed to me
Were the very laws of eternity

It is the cold that creates the fire
It is the dame that creates the sire
It is the rain that creates the grass
It is the lad that creates the lass

It is the dark that creates the lamp
It is the drought that creates the damp
It is the mob that creates the flight
It is the unknown that creates the sight

It is the war that creates the peace
It is slavery that creates democracy
It is the sword that creates the shield
It is the plow that creates the field

I left the rock all aflame
And journeyed to my home again
Upon my bedpost I did lean
My soul burned with what I had seen

On a rock where the fire burned
In the highlands where I learned
That what was there revealed to me
Were the very laws of eternity
