Lehi's Lament
(Gary Mccallister (one Man Mormon Blues Band))
I Nephi 1:4 "My Father, Lehi, having dwelt at Jerusalem in all his days . . . ."
I tried to capture a young Lehi, perhaps how he might have felt in his later teen years. I pictured him as frustrated by the injustice and squalor around himself and yearning to do something grand with his life.
Then in the later verses I have him envision the future.
It's a nightmare Can't believe my eyes
People on the ground I can hear their wounded cries
It seems so sensless I feel defenseless
I feel so small
We live in fear No tongue can tell
The streets of Jerusalem look like the gates of Hell
People in need people in greed stand side by side
CHORUS
I want to live I want to believe
I want to dream No time for sleep
I only know one way to live
I want to give and give and give
I see the waters of Babylon
I see Egyptian armies marching in the dawn
I feel the thunder rolling under my feet
Rocks turn red like a bloody stain
Not much I can do about this suffering and pain
From the beginning I see the ending without eyes
Darkness falls like a thief from a roof
Sun comes up with a cloven hoof
I can see it coming I see men running away
