Lehi's Story
(Gary Mccallister (one Man Mormon Blues Band))
Most people who listen to this CD will know who Lehi was. But there may be some who don't. So I wanted to tell the story in a concise way for those who needed it to appreciate the songs to follow.
I spent many months, almost two years, living with Lehi. Imagining another persons life has required that I assume that what is most personal is also most general. That is, how I might feel in a given circumstance, might be how another would have felt.
These songs are therefore far more personal than you might imagine. In fact, sometimes I wasn't sure if I was writing about Lehi, or about me. Anyway, this is Lehi's story. I hope you like it.
(PS - some have asked me for the documentation for saying that Sariah was a Judean Queen of beauty and renown. All I can say is I have none. I made it up. But it makes such a much better story than to say she was a dirty orphan girl in rags.)
The last Prophet of the pre-babylonian Jewish nation, dwelt in the metropolis of Jerusalem, hallowed place of Solomon's Sacred Temple. He was a merchant and commander of caravans, versed in the many languages of man, and yet devoted to a communion with God. He was a Father of strong son's and daughters, and husband to a Judean Queen of beauty and renown.
To the south, Egypt with it's ancient culture and bitter memories of chains and slavery. To the north, Babylon, the waters of which will be salted by Jewish tears. He proclaimed the destruction of the Temple and called upon all men to repent and follow God. But the people of his day refused to listen. In the end they sought to take the Prophets life.
Knowing his fate by having been warned by God in a dream, Lehi led his family into the wilderness, not knowing beforehand where he would go. Relying upon God and using his knowledge of travel and terrain, he led his small family of adventurers across barren lands for eight long years, to the very shores of a mighty sea.
There they crafted a ship with painted sails and curious workmanship. Then they ventured upon the waters where they were tossed about by mighty storms, until at last they landed upon the shores of their new promised land. And then, knowing that his mortal ministry was accomplished, he called his family together, blessed them and died.
