Mary Pondered These Things In Her Heart
(Gary McCallister (One Man Mormon Blues Band))
The story told in the book of Luke in the New Testament says that "Mary pondered these things in her heart". That is how her story ends, in my mind. I am sure Mary reflected on the events of her life many times in the years that followed the birth of her baby. Now it is our turn to reflect.
I chose to use the melody from "Green Grow the Lilacs". The original song was called Green Grows the Laurel" and originated in Scotland in the 17 century. The Lilac version was an 1800's American ballad. Both versions were about people pining for someone who does not love them. Maybe, in part, I chose this tune because of Christ's reference to the lilies of the field. Maybe I liked the metaphor that Christ brought new life to the earth. Then again, I think I just liked the melody.
A child in the desert innocent of sin
Betrothed to Joseph her life to begin
Life was only beginning to start
And Mary Pondered these things in her heart
The angel came and announced her baby child
Elizabeth also with her baby so mild
Mary promised that she'd do her part
And Mary pondered these things in her heart
Joseph dreamt than an angel did say
He should take Mary for his wedding day
His knowledge to the baby impart
And Mary Pondered these things in her heart
The angels sang in the Heavens above
The shepherds came in devotion and love
Straw in a manger where He had his start
And Mary Pondered these things in her heart
The wise men came to see her baby
They traveled far They say there were three
They say they came following a star
And Mary Pondered these things in her heart
