One Man Mormon Blues Band: Music
Song to Elizabeth
(Gary McCallister (One Man Mormon Blues Band))
This melody is an old love song called "The Trees They Do Grow High". The song dates back to the 1700's when it was presumably based upon the true story of a young woman who wed a boy many years her junior. Child marriages, to form political and economic alliances, were somewhat common at the time. The young boy dies, and the young woman finds herself a widow at an early age.
This song was probably the most intimidating to compose, as it has been set to music many times by the masters. It is traditionally known as the "the Magnificat". I tried to stay as true as possible to the words of the New Testament.
Mary said
My soul doth magnify the Lord
My spirit rejoices in God my Savior
He hath regarded the handmaid of the Lord
Called blessed from now until forever
For He that is mighty hath done to me great things
All men who fear him mercy He will bring
Holy is his name His peace is on the wing
For generations around in a ring
He brought the mighty low exalted the poor
Sent a rich man away from his door
To those of low degree He has given more
Has shown his servant Israel His mercy
My soul doth magnify the Lord
My spirit rejoices in God my Savior
He hath regarded the handmaid of the Lord
Called blessed from now until forever
