One Man Mormon Blues Band: Music

Elizabeth Said

(Gary McCallister (One Man Mormon Blues Band))
The original song, "Railroad Bill", is actually about a notorious hobo who rode the rails in the 1800's. Railroad Bill was a black man from Alabama who had a pretty violent career of crime before being killed himself. He was a hero to many blacks of his day for bucking white authority The story part of the song has been mostly lost, and it is often performed as an instrumental. I found myself humming it one day and thought it was a pretty melody, when divorced from the violence of the original subject matter.
Why would you come to me
What have I to do with thee
Ears to hear, eyes to see
Why would you come to me
Elizabeth said Elizabeth said
Why would you come to me

Blessed woman art thou of all
Offspring of the line of Saul
Miracles assault us all
Blessed woman of all
Elizabeth said Elizabeth said
Blessed woman of all

Lo as soon as I heard your voice
The child in me leaped at the noise
My child and I both rejoiced
When we heard your voice
Elizabeth said Elizabeth said
As soon as we heard your voice

Blessed art thou to believe
God's promise to the daughter of Eve
For what God said He will achieve
It's God's son you did conceive
