Sins of Scarlet

(One Man Mormon Blues Band)
I am a convert to the LDS Church. But I was baptized, under some parental pressure, into another Church at the age of twelve. As I recall the event, I remember thinking, even at that young age, that this wasn't the right thing to do. The people in that Church were good people, and my parents were devout. But somehow I really didn't want to do it. Anyway, it was a pretty fundamental type of religion and I do recall being a little confused about just how sinful a twelve year old boy could be. The Colorado River runs red all the time anyway, so it couldn't have anything to do with me . . . could it?
I was baptized in the Highland Canal in 1952
All my sins have been washed away Left me shiny and new
They floated down the river past Fruita town and the Loma aqueduct
Dumped back into the river there just more squawfish bad luck

Past Fischers Tower and Dead Horse Point Southern Utah red rock country
Through the Grand Canyon and the Glen Canyon Dam like the river their never free
My sins have stained the Mexican border California delta country
And now they rest forevermore at the bottom of the Pacific sea

Amazing grace when the sweet chariot swings low
The lion lies down with the lamb on the straight and narrow line lying down
Verily I say unto you Wherever there’s more than two
Go down Moses to the promised land go down go down

They said my sins were like scarlet though I was but 12 years old
The wind was blowing there were clouds in the sky and the water was awfully cold
I was washed by the blood of the lamb and clean went to my bed
But I’ve always worried that it might be my fault the Colorado River runs red
