One Man Mormon Blues Band: Music
The REAL Birth of the Blues
(One Man Mormon Blues Band)
September 8, 2005
Gary Loren McCallister
Does this song need any explanation?
Let me tell you about the birth of the blues.
Just how tough it would be nobody knew.
How much they would hurt they hadn’t a clue.
So let me tell you about what and who.
The story began with a woman and man,
That’s how all the trouble began.
But things didn’t really get out of hand
Until they were sent to the promised land.
This is the truth you can take it from me,
It didn’t start in St. James Infirmary.
It wasn’t a wail from a downhearted frail,
Or black man’s song from the heart of a jail.
I know that’s what makes all the news,
That the south is where they invented the blues.
And I know there are some who hold to this view,
But I’m here to tell you it’s simply not true.
Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen,
The problems they’ve caused clear down to my genes.
When a Prophet said that it was true
That a man should have, not one wife, but two.
Now don’t tell me about losing old Dan.
How about two women with just one man?
I’m here to tell everybody the news.
That’s how the Mormons invented the blues.
